These surgeries have been performed in a wide variety of age groups ranging from 35 years to 85 years.

Usually the Patient is admitted one day prior to the surgery. The surgical procedure lasts for approximately one hour. The patient is made to walk 12 hours after the surgery and is usually discharged on the fifth day after surgery. Dr Kunal Shah has devised a protocol which ensures early mobilisation and pain-free post surgical period. In most cases patient can play light sports and even squat and sit cross-legged a few months after surgery.

Hip Replacement

Arthritis of the Hip is vastly different from arthritis in the knee. Usually the causes of hip arthritis are multifactorial, and ageing is one of the least common causes. There is a wide range in the age of patients suffering from hip arthritis because of the multifactorial etiology. The most common cause of hip arthritis in young patients is Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral head. The other common causes are Failed fracture fixation, Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Hip replacement surgery is being performed for more than 50 years now. The advancement in the surgical technique and the implants has been enormous. The bearing surfaces have evolved, and this has led to an increased longevity and range of motion.

The surgery usually takes about an hour to perform and the patient can start walking on the day of surgery. We use the minimally invasive approach which ensures that there is minimal blood loss and early post-operative rehabilitation. Patient is discharged on the fourth day after surgery. By the end of three to four weeks usually the patient can walk independently and do most activities of daily life.

We have operated patients ranging from 21years to 90years. The newer bearing surfaces like ceramic have increased the longevity of Hip replacement to approximately 30 years.

Dr. Kunal Shah has also been trained for Revision Joint Replacement surgery and we regularly perform surgery for failed replacements. These surgeries are done after meticulous pre-operative planning and templating. The results are very gratifying, and the patients do almost as well as after primary hip replacement surgery.
