Joint Replacement

Arthritis

Arthritis means swelling and inflammation of the joint. The two most common form of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. The common joints affected are the knee and the hip joint. But it can also affect the shoulder and the elbow. The factors that can accelerate this problem are obesity, mechanical malalignment, injury etc.

For patients who do not benefit with conservative management, Joint Replacement is a life-changing surgery. Not only does it relieve pain and disability, it also makes the individual independent and improves the quality of life dramatically. With newer technologies, joint replacement surgery has advanced considerably and now we can offer joint replacement to the younger and active population also. With newer metals the life of implants has also increased. This can range from 25 to 30 years for the knee and the hip joint respectively.

Knee Replacement

Degenerative arthritis is most common in the Knee joint. We have a Comprehensive Knee Care approach for Knee arthritis. Patients are offered a variety of solutions depending on their age and stage of arthritis. For severe cases, knee replacement surgery provides an immediate solution.

At Ashutosh hospital, we perform more than hundred knee replacement surgeries in a year. We are the pioneering center for Unicompartmental knee replacement surgery (Partial knee replacement) in the region. The state of art modular operation theatre ensures a very smooth and safe surgical procedure. Our Joint replacement team led by Dr Ajay Shah and Dr. Kunal Shah have performed numerous complex and revision Knee replacement procedures. These surgeries have been performed in a wide variety of age groups ranging from 35 years to 85 years.

Usually the Patient is admitted one day prior to the surgery. The surgical procedure lasts for approximately one hour. The patient is made to walk 12 hours after the surgery and is usually discharged on the fifth day after surgery. Dr Kunal Shah has devised a protocol which ensures early mobilisation and pain-free post surgical period. In most cases patient can play light sports and even squat and sit cross-legged a few months after surgery.

Patients whose first joint replacement surgery has failed for some reason have also come to us. We have got good results from Revision Knee Replacements. These patients who have lost all hope of getting back to normal have really benefited and become independent in their day-to-day life. These procedures are complex and require a high deal of planning and preparation. We have the topmost implants in our armamentarium, and this helps in providing the optimum fit so necessary in Revision surgeries.

Out Testimonial Corner Provides experiences of patients and how their life has changed post Knee Replacement Surgery.

Hip Replacement

Arthritis of the Hip is vastly different from arthritis in the knee. Usually the causes of hip arthritis are multifactorial, and ageing is one of the least common causes. There is a wide range in the age of patients suffering from hip arthritis because of the multifactorial etiology. The most common cause of hip arthritis in young patients is Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral head. The other common causes are Failed fracture fixation, Rheumatoid arthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Hip replacement surgery is being performed for more than 50 years now. The advancement in the surgical technique and the implants has been enormous. The bearing surfaces have evolved, and this has led to an increased longevity and range of motion.

The surgery usually takes about an hour to perform and the patient can start walking on the day of surgery. We use the minimally invasive approach which ensures that there is minimal blood loss and early post-operative rehabilitation. Patient is discharged on the fourth day after surgery. By the end of three to four weeks usually the patient can walk independently and do most activities of daily life.

We have operated patients ranging from 21years to 90years. The newer bearing surfaces like ceramic have increased the longevity of Hip replacement to approximately 30 years.

Dr. Kunal Shah has also been trained for Revision Joint Replacement surgery and we regularly perform surgery for failed replacements. These surgeries are done after meticulous pre-operative planning and templating. The results are very gratifying, and the patients do almost as well as after primary hip replacement surgery.
